Shatiea Blount, DocSocSci, LCSW-C, LICSW is Licensed Clinical Social Worker and prevention scientist committed to reducing mental illness, behavioral health disorders, and psychological distress within Black communities through academic research, impactful training, education and awareness, and clinical services. She received a Bachelor of Social Work from Delaware State University, a Master of Social Work from Howard University, and a Doctor of Social Science degree from Wilmington University. Her doctoral research examined culture as a social determinant of mental health and explored the cultural dynamics of adult parent-child relationships in the British Virgin Islands. Her career began in public child welfare, juvenile justice and homeless services before she transitioned to clinical practice. However, her focus has expanded to mental illness prevention and psychological well-being in Black and urban communities globally. Her work is uniquely positioned at the nexus of academic research and practical application, addressing mental health challenges within racially homogenous, socially, and culturally diverse communities. Dr. Blount has trained community-based clinicians, provided education and awareness training, and facilitated workshops on mental health and psychological wellbeing interventions and service delivery. Her post-doctoral work at George Washington University School of Public Health focused on mental health and wellbeing over the life course in minority communities. This research focus is intended to extend her research on cultural and community dynamics as determinants of mental health and wellbeing.
In addition to her academic and clinical pursuits, Dr. Blount is a dancer. Through dance she amplifies the importance of culturally relevant art and movement for broader audiences.
